Summer Surfing Wetsuits
This will depend on a few factors, such as how often you plan to be in the water. If you are lucky enough to live or surf in warm waters of 20°C plus, then a shortie may be the better option as you get more freedom of movement, and they are so easy to get on and off.
Winter Surfing Wetsuits
There are indeed two rules of thought for winter surfing wetsuits, so if you are going to use the suit occasionally, look at the O'Neill Epic or the Rip Curl Omega, as these are great entry-level wetsuits that will keep you warm and flexible. However, when winter arrives and the water gets cold in the UK and Europe, it is worth spending as much as you can afford to get the warmest possible suit. We suggest investing in a 5mm winter wetsuit, at least when the cold sets in and the temperatures plummet.
The more you spend, the more technical the wetsuit will become, including some toasty thermal layers and clever warmth properties. It is also the case that the more you spend, the better the neoprene they use. This means that the suit is more flexible and will retain your body heat a lot better.
