You will require more thermal protection when diving than other above-water sports, such as surfing or kayaking. This is because when you dive below the surface of the water, you risk the cold water flushing through your wetsuit and lowering your body temperature. It is recommended that in the UK summer, you wear a 5mm diving wetsuit; in the UK winter, you wear a 7mm diving wetsuit with a hood and wetsuit gloves and boots.
If you are a keen water sports enthusiast, you own a standard surfing wetsuit. Although a traditional wetsuit offers thermal protection and can be suitable for short summer dives, it will provide different thermal properties than a specialist diving wetsuit.
