What Is Spear Fishing?

Spearfishing is the activity of free diving in the sea to catch fish with either a spearfishing sling gun or a pole spear. Unlike regular finishing, where you sit on the water's edge and cast a line and bait into the water, spearfishing gets you up close and in the water with the fish. Not only is spearfishing a great form of exercise, breath control and mindfulness, but it also allows you to eliminate the risk of by-fishing and catch precisely what you intend without disturbing other fish and sea creatures. Spearfishing enables you to connect with the sea and your prey, providing a level of respect and understanding for the environment you are in that you wouldn’t gain when fishing from land. Spear fishing is also the most sustainable option when it comes to catching marine life as not only are you catching the exact amount of fish you need, but there is also less equipment waste, such as fishing lines, which contributes to the plastic pollution in the ocean.

Spearfishing Fins

One of the best ways to free dive to a depth where your prey resides is with spearfishing fins, and we have a range of different spearfishing fins from Cressi for you to choose from.

Can Your Spear Fish Without A Spear Fishing Wetsuit?

By all means, give it a go; however, you will find that without a proper spearfishing wetsuit, you won't be able to gain any depth in the water. The main difference between a surfing wetsuit and a spearfishing wetsuit is its function and the type of neoprene used. When swimming below the surface of the water continuously, you require a wetsuit with reduced water flushing and keep you warm, for which spearfishing wetsuits are designed.

How Much Weight Do I Need For Spear Fishing?

When diving in the water, it is not uncommon for your body to float, especially when wearing a wetsuit. Therefore you will require a weighted spearfishing belt. The general consensus is you should wear weights equivalent to 5% of your body weight when using a 3mm wetsuit and weights equivalent to 10% of your body weight when using a 5mm wetsuit.

Can You Spear Fish In Scuba Gear?

No, it is illegal to spearfish in the UK whilst scuba diving. In fact, it is illegal through the EU, and there is no expected review of this policy after Brexit. Therefore only free-diving spearfishing is permitted.
